In this episode of Beyond Your Default, George and I are digging into something I know a lot of us wrestle with: purpose, which is one of the 4 Cornerstones of the Superhuman Framework. Now, I’m going to be real with you—this isn’t one of those episodes where we’re going to give you some shiny, neatly packaged definition of purpose. Because, honestly, purpose doesn’t work that way.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the pressure to “find your purpose,” or worse, been convinced that everyone else seems to have theirs all figured out while you’re still flailing—same. You’re not alone.

We’ve been conditioned to think purpose is this big, dramatic thing. Like one day, we’re just going to wake up, everything will suddenly click, and we’ll have this perfectly defined life mission laid out in front of us. But in reality, purpose is much messier—and way more interesting than that.
Purpose isn’t something you “find.” It’s something you live into, every single day, by taking steps in a direction that feels right, even when you’re not entirely sure where it’s going to lead.

In today’s conversation, we’re breaking down how purpose evolves, how it shows up in the small choices we make, and why it’s more of a compass than a map. Purpose doesn’t magically make everything easier, but it helps you stay grounded, especially when life throws curveballs.
Whether you’re feeling lost or stuck, or if you’re trying to figure out what it even means to live with purpose, this is one of those episodes that’s going to help you feel a little less alone—and a lot more empowered to keep moving forward.

What Does Purpose Actually Mean? – We start by breaking down the idea of purpose. What does it really mean to live with purpose? We talk about how purpose is less about a single, well-defined mission and more about a direction that guides you, even when the specifics of the journey aren’t clear. Purpose is something you live into, not something you “achieve” or cross off a list.
The Pressure to “Find” Your Purpose – There’s so much pressure in society to figure out your purpose as if it’s something you’ll suddenly stumble upon one day, fully formed. We discuss why this is a flawed approach and how the need to “define” purpose can actually hold you back. Instead, we share a different way of thinking about purpose—one that allows for flexibility and discovery over time.
How Purpose Evolves – Purpose isn’t static. What drives you at one point in your life might change, and that’s okay. We explore how purpose can evolve, especially as your circumstances, values, and priorities shift. George shares how his purpose has changed over the years—from the military to becoming “the HubSpot guy”—and what that journey has taught him about staying open to new directions.
Purpose as a Compass – One of my favorite metaphors we use in this episode is thinking about purpose as a compass. Purpose doesn’t eliminate obstacles or storms in life, but it keeps you oriented in the right direction when things get tough. We discuss how purpose acts as a guiding force, especially when you feel lost or uncertain about the next steps.
Aligning Your Actions with Purpose – Once you’ve gained some clarity on what drives you, the next step is to align your daily actions with that purpose. We talk about how important it is to recognize the patterns in your life—what lights you up, what drains you—and how to take intentional steps toward living in alignment with those discoveries.
Experimenting to Find Your Path – Living with purpose doesn’t mean you have all the answers right away. In fact, part of the process is experimenting, trying new things, and seeing what resonates. We talk about the importance of giving yourself permission to explore without pressure and how taking action (even when you’re unsure) is often the best way to find clarity.
When Purpose Feels Far Away – We also tackle what happens when you feel disconnected from your purpose, or when the path forward isn’t clear. George and I share personal stories about moments of doubt, what to do when you feel off course, and how to reorient yourself when purpose feels distant or abstract.
Purpose and Persistence – Lastly, we dig into the relationship between purpose and persistence. Having a sense of purpose doesn’t mean things will always be easy, but it does give you something to hold onto when the going gets tough. We talk about how purpose fuels persistence and helps you push through moments of doubt or failure.
